Early food intake. Starter feed, also known as calf milk replacer, is formulated with concentrate according to the nutritional needs of calves. Its role is to promote the transition of calves from milk-based nutrition to full plant-based feed. The feed shape is powdery or granular, so that calves are used in the second week after birth, under low milk feeding conditions, the amount of milk for calves gradually increases, and slowly begins to get used to concentrate feed and roughage, if the cow trough is equipped with a calf feeding guardrail (that is, can imitate cow feeding, but also prevent cows from eating calf feed), the feed intake of 30-day-old calves can reach more than 300 grams.
Supplementary feeding of calves. 1. Concentrate supplement. After feeding, apply a small amount of concentrate on the nose mirror and lips, or sprinkle a little in the milk bucket to lick the food, so as to promote the habit of feeding concentrate, 250 g to 300 g at 1 month of age and 500 g to 700 g at 2 months of age. 2. Feed hay. Starting from 1 week of age, add high-quality hay (such as legume green hay, etc.) to the grass frame of the cattle pen to train calves to eat freely, promote the development of the tumor net stomach, and prevent licking foreign bodies. 3. Feed green and juicy feed. Green succulent feed such as carrots, beets, etc., calves start to supplement at 20 days of age to promote the development of digestive organs. Feed 20 grams a day, to 2 months of age can be increased to 1 kg ~1.5 kg, 3 months of age is 2 kg ~3 kg. Silage can be fed starting at 2 months of age, 100 g to 150 g per day, 1.5 kg to 2 kg at 3 months of age, 4 kg to 5 kg at 4 months to 6 months of age. 4. Column feeding. The addition of a calf pen in the cow barn can only be freely accessed by the calf, and the built-in calf concentrate feed and short cut high-quality group feed (such as alfalfa, red bean grass, big Yan, etc.) can improve the speed of calf weight gain. After about 40 days of column feeding, the weight of 60-day-old calves can reach 65 kg ~75 kg, and the daily feed intake of concentrate feed can reach about 0.7 kg. Continue to 90 days of age, weight can reach 80 kg ~90 kg, daily feed intake of 1 kg ~1.5 kg.
Implement weaning standards. When the daily feed intake of concentrate is stable at more than 1 kg, it is basically 3 months after birth. The calf is moved to a weaned barn and breastfed at first every other day, then every other day, for about 10 days or so.
